Dr. Vogel is a surgeon-scientist whose work extends beyond the operating room into the research lab. Together with pediatric neuro-oncologist Dr. Derek Hanson and CDI research scientist Dr. Claire Carter, he co-founded the pediatric neuro-oncology laboratory at Hackensack Meridian Health’s Center for Discovery and Innovation (CDI), the first lab of its kind in New Jersey. Made possible through Tackle Kids Cancer, the lab’s mission is to advance research that meets the clinical needs of children with central nervous system tumors.
Its initial focus is Embryonal Tumor with Multilayered Rosettes (ETMR), an exceptionally aggressive brain tumor that most often affects children under four and carries a survival rate of less than 10%. Dr. Vogel’s dual role as a pediatric neurosurgeon and researcher means that what is learned at the bench is directly informed by what he sees in the clinic, and vice versa, with the goal of improving outcomes for children facing some of the most challenging brain tumors.
